in love with a chihuahua

It's true. I'm in love with a chihuahua. I'm not even embarrassed to say it out loud.

I've never been a chihuahua kind of girl. Not even a small dog kind of girl. I adopted a pit bull, after all. I despise despised yappy little dogs with small bladders that can't keep up on a 3-mile run. Falling in love with Ramsey was a given...not so much with Pablo.

It wasn't love at first sight. Like a lot of new relationships, there was a little bit of the "excitement of the chase" with Pablo and me.
He's not exactly welcoming of new people into his space. I pride myself on every animal I've ever met falling in love with me. He growled, barked, and kept his distance. That made me want to win him over in a way I've never thought possible. I moved closer, and tried to pet him. He bared his teeth and yelped.

After a few days, and with a feeling that he wasn't just playing hard to get, I gave up. And then he came closer. The less attention I paid him, the more interested he became. This little guy has really got his game figured out, and I promise you, he didn't learn it from his daddy...

Our relationship moved quickly after that - he trusted me to pick him up, seemed excited to see me when I came over, and even started snuggling against my belly at bedtime.

I took Pablo to the vet for his check up one day last summer, alone. The vet kept calling me Pablo's momma. It was the first time anyone had said that, and it made me smile. I went home and told Chad, and he just smiled and responded with "well, you ARE his momma." My heart melted. I'm in love with a chihuahua.
On our way to the vet.

The rest is history. We have an after-work snuggle routine. It's a strange night if he isn't snuggled up against me somewhere, and I tell him 50 times a day that I love him. Some days, I still can't believe he loves me as much as he does, so I take pictures of it whenever I get the chance. (oh hell, I am now the girl that dresses up her chihuahua and then takes pictures of us making kissy faces...my apologies if this makes you gag. I would have too, a year ago.)

He's even won over my friends. He really is a ladies' man. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a rush on chihuahua adoptions this week, after he spent an entire evening at wine club schmoozing with the girls...

  2. Chihuahuas really are special animals. My son wasn't fond of them either when I brought home our little angel, Dublin the Irish Chi. Unfortunately, we lost our little Dublin in April 2011 due to complications of diabetes and an auto-immune disorder he had when we adopted him. My son now admits that he too is a "Chihuahua lover" and can't wait for us to get our next Chi! Love you Pablo.

  4. I never thought I'd be a chihuahua lover either, and yet, here I am, too. :) I will admit though that I'm always quick to say that mine is a chi-pom mix and not like the stereotypical teeny yippy-yappy ones. My girl's a 10-pounder with a bark more manly than my parent's two boy dogs, haha. She's playful and snuggly and I wouldn't trade her for the world.

I've been a fan of Ramsey & Pablo for a long time and knew he has a charisma all his own. I'm glad to see and hear about your relationship. This pics of him over your shoulder are just too perfect. :D

  7. Hi Brandy, I'm Shannon (Ed the 3 leggers Mum), I just saw your blog and LOVE it. The way you admit how you have become with Pablo is so funny, but it was inevitable, he is a dog after all. But it's good to know that we can love our dogs so much and promote their breeds without being pathetic, bad shorts wearing, song making up weirdos like you see on animal planet.

  8. We have a Pug and a Chihuahua. I have never been a small dog person as the smallest dogs I ever had growing up was a Cocker Spaniel. Usually it was Boxers, Dobermans, German Shepards, and etc. But I love my little guys. They are awesome dogs.

  10. Same here. Really didn't like little dogs until I fell in love with a friend's. Had dobermans before, I guess that's why I enjoy Ramsey and Pablo so much! Have had Chico for almost 9 years now!

  12. I have a long-haired chihuahua, Tino, who is the love of my life. Well, the second love of my life (hubby's the first). Like you I was never a small dog kind of gal, but he has melted my heart.

  13. I completely understand your love for Pablo. I have a longhaired chihuahua named Beary Cuddly and he is my best bud. My husband and I get into fun little arguments over who he belongs to because that dog is MINE! Lol. My teenage sons are crazy about him too. I really enjoy your stories-they make me laugh.

  16. Chihuahuas are indeed special. I'm a dog owner, both big and small, for my whole life. Have had MANY. Got my Chi 8 yrs ago and she is for sure something special. I think it's something you cannot explain if you've not experienced it. I do not know why people think they are nasty, snippy, yippy dogs. Mine is a LOVE! Luv me big doggies too. You can tell that Pablo is a special guy from the vids. So cute. I wanna eat him up!

  17. I used to only have big dogs but my backyard is too small. I now have a Chihuahua and he is the love of my life. My world would not be the same without him. Actually he is the 3rd Chihuahua I have had. I love him to bits :)

  20. Glad to hear it worked out, we have a small chi too, Fergie, and yes I dress her up, have done since we got her 5 yrs ago, she won't leave the house without clothes, and glad to see you packing him in your coat, Fergies's fav. place to be is snuggled in my housecoat. They love you so much and do become like children.....so you are a mama, and like me very proud of it. They are the best dogs, and constantly keep you smiling and amused.
Congrats on you and Chad, you seem to be a great couple and wonderful parents, take care

  21. Ugh, I hate it when people call them "yappy little dogs" I hate it when people see my two well behaving quiet Chihuahuas and feel the need to tell me how much they HAAAATE Chihuahuas....but I'm happy for you. You are a lucky girl to have such a wonderful Chi

    1. Heheh. I've been much more careful on choosing my words since meeting Pablo - I guess it's a lesson for me that I was judging a breed, which is exactly what I'm asking others not to do with Ramsey and Suvi! :)

    2. It's true! Chihuahuas get a bad rap that they don't deserve. A lot comes in those teeny tiny packages.

  22. I'm still not a small dog person even when I have two of them :'D I don't like chihuahuas at all, so I really have been here just for Ramsey ^^'' And well now for Suvi too <3 But I think it's very nice that Pablo has you as his fan now :) He's cute even if he does not melt me the way Ramsey does ;3

  23. I have a Chihuahua named Spartacus. He is my baby! He sleeps with my husband & I every night. We also have a Lab/Collie mix, she is our big girl. Her name is Guinevere. She thinks she is the same size as the little one. They are both such wonderful dogs and I couldn't imagine our lives without them. Keep loving all your babies. :)

  24. I got my Chugg named Jose' on September 14th of last year. And I can't imagine my life without him!! He was a rescue dog. My first dog! And he is my shadow. He goes insane when he hears me come home from work. He has to get hugs and gives me kisses in between his wiggles of joy for momma being home. Of course he wants to go with me wherever I go!!!! lol!
And every night he gets a nice soft warm bed to sleep in. And he makes himself very comfortable, but almost always snuggled up right next to me.
I love your videos. You all seem very happy together.
I look forward to seeing more.
I hope you all have many years of health and happiness.
Hugs from me and Jose' in Wisconsin!!!

    Tina

All my life I have had cats. I even had a chinchila for a couple years

  25. Ah Pablo is just adorable - I have a chug (chihuahu X pug) and I adore him. And you and Pablo look great together, would never have thought you "didnt like him" at one time..Lol. Ah isnt it amazing how our animals become our "babies" - I know mine have!

  26. I'm glad you came around. But, it's not just Pablo who is lovable--but most "yappy little dogs." The beginning part of your post sounded about as judgemental and ignorant as anyone who's judged pit bulls and dobermans for being dangerous--or any breed for the good/bad qualities that were bred into them. I hope, going forward, you don't anymore.

    1. I agree. As I mentioned in a few replies to other comments - it was a lesson for me, though written for the blog a bit tongue-in-cheek to call out exactly this point :) Thanks for reading!!

  27. Wow, the hypocrisy behind your words is astounding. Don't you try to advocate understanding the breed/dog before making assumptions? Are you still biased against other dog breeds?

    1. Absolutely. And clearly, I was the first to admit this, specifically wroting it in a way that made my hypocrisy obvious :) Of course, I do believe there is a difference in having a preference on the type of dog I'd like to own, and something like BSL for an entire breed. I've never said NO ONE should own small dogs - for some lifestyles, personalities, families, and individuals, they are a perfect fit. My comments were a bit tongue-in-cheek, because I was trying to make the exact point you call out above. :) Now, I'm going to go back and read my own post about having thicker skin...

  28. I was never a chihuahua person either till 12 years ago when I went into a pet shop and saw the tiny black dog in his crate. I had the clerk take him out so I could see him, ended up walking around for about an hour with him snuggled to me. It was on after that, u got it. He went out the door with me, and became my trucking buddie , not to mention my best friend. And u can tell them anything and they don't repeat it. He his now 12 yrs old, and just as precious as the day I walked out of that pet shop.

  29. This story resonates with us chihuahua owners. Our little Paco is a ray of sunshine every day ! He recently went on his first plane trip and did great ! We were so proud of him. Which is another point - chis are very smart and love to be challenged. I taught him to sit and shake, stay with the clicker method.

  30. It's obvious you love your little chi Pablo and would do anything for him. However, I couldn't help notice the vulnerable position he was in sitting on your lap unstrained in the car between you and the steering wheel. If you had to brake suddenly he could be crushed in between and, even further, if the airbag was deployed it would cause severe and even fatal damage to little Pablo.

All dogs should be safely restrained in the car, just like human beings. Even if nothing happens, it's also also a distraction while concentrating on the road. Please know this advice is in good spirit and genuine concern for your safety and the safety of little Pablo.

    1. You are absolutely right. What you can't see is that we're actually not moving in this photo :) I am also a strong believer of not playing on my phone and driving (lost a brother to this), so in addition to ensuring my pets are safe, would also not take pics of them while driving. I should have made that more clear in the caption, so as not to set a bad example. Thank you!!
